Unlocking a new hobby - I get hooked on crochet

It's been on my bucket list since a long time ago to learn crocheting, and around the middle of 2022, I decided to start it. There are some reasons why I want to start crocheting, but the main reason why I started to learn at that time was to relieve my stress and fill my bored time.

Well, it's true; it helps me a lot. Though sometimes I get stressed while crocheting because there are a lot of projects that I want to start, I struggle with which project or pattern to choose.

A New Beginning

To learn something new, it's always not easy at the beginning. In crocheting, I feel that way too. Actually, I bought a hook years ago when I went to a craft store, but I didn't have enough interest to start crochet because at that time my interest was in cross-stitch embroidery. So, I just saved it as a collection, and who knows, my interest in crocheting will grow years later.

I've already had a hook, so I thought I just needed to buy yarn to start crocheting. And my crochet journey started with a stupid thing: I didn't research a lot about the yarn, like the materials, where to buy them, and price markets.

I just go to the local store—it's not even a craft or sewing supplies store—and buy yarn. I think it's been about a month since I learned to crochet; it's difficult, and my hands keep hurting. Of course, it's because the yarn that I bought is polyester; it's not soft and is difficult for me to handle as a beginner.

So, my advice is for those of you who want to start crocheting, please do some research first before starting to crochet, especially about tools such as hook size and yarn materials.

My Projects

It's been more than a year since I started crocheting, and I've tried different projects. I make amigurumis, wearables, and decorations. It wasn't easy, and I made a lot of mistakes even until now, but it's still fun.

The projects I made are so-so; sometimes I find them easy, sometimes difficult, and sometimes both. Let's say, for amigurumi, it will be easy to make one if you follow the existing pattern, but sometimes the difficult thing is joining the parts.

For wearables, it's easy to make a small one, so it won't take too much time, but when you make a big one, it requires more attention, calculation, and time. And for decoration, well, I think it's best to follow the existing pattern for now since I haven't tried making my own pattern.

So,

Crochet is an easy hobby, if we aren't talking about the difficult patterns, which require only two materials: crochet hook and yarn. And since my hands can't stay still while watching movies, dramas, or anime, I used to always keep my hands busy, like snacking or playing with my phone, so I think crochet is a great way to keep myself busy. Kill two birds with one stone.

Crochet is time-consuming, but it's a fun and relaxing activity. There are endless crochet projects, so if you're also interested in crocheting, happy crocheting!
